Rosehips are a great friend for gut and joint health, as well supporting the immune system
Research undertaken in the 1930’s showed that home grown Rosehips contained 20-40 times more vitamin C than imported oranges, as well as vitamins (A, B1, B2, B3, K,) flavonoids, tannins, polyphenols, carotenoids, volatile oils and biotin
During the war years, over 2,000 tonnes of Rosehips were gathered by the WI and other volunteers, organised by the County Herb Committees. Imports of oranges were stopped during the second world war, so Rosehip syrup was rationed and supplied to children throughout the war years and for some time afterwards, to ensure they received sufficient vitamin C 🌿
As well as being an incredible immune support, Rosehips are antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, chondroprotective (protect cartilage) and anti-nococeptive (help relieve pain sensation)…and research is ongoing, looking at their ability to help with diabetes and cholesterol management 🌿
In contrast to NSAIDs (such as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen), Rosehips anti-inflammatory actions don’t have side effects such as gastric ulceration or platelet inhibition, providing a helpful alternative for people who may be at increased risk from the gastrointestinal or cardiovascular side effects of NSAIDs 🌿
